memorial day grilling tips

It’s Memorial Day weekend, which is unofficially the kick-off to Summer for lots of Floridians. If you’re having a Memorial Day BBQ, make sure you have enough propane to last the entire time. You can easily bring your 20# cylinder to our store and we’ll refill it quickly and safely for just $15.99. That’s more gas than you receive at the exchange racks and for less!

Now, is a good time to review some important propane safety tips to help everyone stay safe this Memorial Day.

  • Make your grilling area a “No Play Zone,” keeping children and pets away from all grilling equipment.

  • Always make sure the lid to your grill is open before lighting.

  • Grill in a well-ventilated area at least 10 feet from any building and 3-feet from shrubs and trees.

  • Never fiddle with fittings or the tank while your grill is operating.

  • Never attempt to repair, clean or clear blockages from your hot grill.

  • Don’t attempt to repair a tank valve on your own. Call J&J Gas Service and we’ll be glad to assist.

  • If you smell gas and can safely turn off the valve, do so. Otherwise immediately have everyone leave the area and call 911 or your local fire department. Before you use the grill again, call upon J&J Gas Service to inspect your cylinder.

Ready to Season Your Grill?

First, give it a good clean by heating it up. Once your grill is nice and hot, use a wire brush to aggressively brush the grates.

Next, get a kitchen rag (one you don’t care about and use specifically for this) and dip it in vegetable oil so it’s coated but not dripping. Use tongs to hold the rag and rub the oil over the grates. According to Joe Carroll, chef of Fette Sau and co-author of Feeding the Fire, “if you’re cooking steak, your grill is now primed and ready” but, he notes that if you’re cooking something more delicate or with a higher sugar content, “wait 5 minutes and then oil the grates again.” He suggests oiling three to four times—and up to 10 times for fish—every time you grill.
